Thanks for this well documented site. I’d be interested in your evidence that Joseph S. Golden was the son of Francis Marion Golden. I had assumed that he was the son of Enoch Golden and Melissa Fox (from White County, TN). I’d be pleased to see any documentation to help me correct my records. Also, I have been able to track down any information on Joseph Golden’s death or his burial location. I’d be very interested in seeing any information you might have. I descend from Joseph’s son William B. Golden.
Hello – This is very interesting. I am, also, thinking that there is some sort of connection between Joseph Golden and Enoch Golden. I found the 1860 census for White County online, and the two are listed on the same page etc. in that census. This fall, when the weather cools off a bit and the landscape up on the plateau is peaking, I plan on going to Sparta to see if I can get a look at the microfilm to check it out. Joseph Golden is my great-grandfather.
From which child of Joseph Golden do you descend? If you do go to Sparta, the archivist there (Geraldine Pollard) is very helpful. I spent an afternoon doing research there a couple years ago. Joseph Golden is listed as a surviving son in the estate records for Enoch Golden. Those records list Joseph as having moved to Georgia, which makes sense given Joseph’s marriage to Mary Jane Gaddis in Catoosa County, Georgia shortly after his father died.
Regarding Joseph Golden as the possible son of Francis Marion Golden, I note the following:
1) The 1860 Limestone County, AL census lists F M Golding’s son as Joseph C. Golding, aged 3 (birthdate approximately 1857).
2) The 1870 Limestone County, AL census lists Francis Golden’s son as Joseph, aged 17. This would imply a birthdate of 1853, but the earlier census is more likely correct.
3) The 1880 census shows F. M. Golden and family living in Sevier County, Arkansas. Joseph is not listed.
4) A Joseph C Golden, born in 1857, marries Sarah A. Farris in Ben Lomand, Sevier County, Arkansas on 5 Jul 1882. Apparently Joseph C. Golden has rejoined his family in Arkansas.
5) A Joseph C. Golden, born abt 1858, marries Rebecca Smith in Ben Lomand, Sevier County, Arkansas. Apparently his first wife had died.
6) On the 1900 census, Joseph C. Golden is living with wife Rebecca and family in Jackson Little River, Arkansas. Birthdate is listed as June 1857.
7) On the 1910 census, Joseph C. Golden and family are still living in Jackson, Little River, Arkansas.

Given this, doesn’t it seem likely that our Joseph Golden is different from the Joseph C. Golden who was the son of Francis Marion Golden?

I’d be interested in knowing more about the reunion in Chattanooga. I descend from John Knox Golden’s brother William Barlow Golden. I’d like to know if anyone knows more about John Knox Golden’s father, Joseph Golden. This site lists Joseph’s father as Frances Marion Golden, but my research points to his father as being Enoch Golden from White County, TN, and his mother as Melissa Fox (whom he married late in life). I’d also like more information abut when Joseph Golden died and where he was buried. Perhaps someone at the reunion will have more information? Perhaps a family Bible record? Hello. I too am Lillie Mae’s great granddaughter from Linnie Mae Seabolt Evers. My father is Lester Evers. My name is Vella. i remember Uncle Joe well as we spent a lot of time there when I was young. Uncle Mack is buried at Chaney Chapel in Dutton along with your grandfather Joe and our great grandparents Lillie and James W. Seabolt. . He was born 30 Dec. 1914 and died 01 Sept 1936 at the age of 21. Al Capone was born in NY in 1899 and died in IL in 1947 . He was just starting his career as a criminal when uncle Mack was born. I seriously doubt what you head has any truth at all to it. After all this time, I am just seeing this response. I don’t think I ever received an email notification and now my email has changed. Hopefully, you will see it and respond back. According to my daddy, he (Mac) lived in Chicago for a time…not sure how long he was there. He evidently got this from his family. (My dad, his parents and his siblings also lived in Chicago for a time as well.) He told me this when I asked what happened that he died so young. That was so many years ago. I asked when I came up on his tombstone. I remember the tree roots have grown up under it and it is raised a little at the top. I will have to ask again, but I thought I remembered my dad saying he was killed/shot.

Frances Marion Golden, born about 1834, did not die in West Virginia in 1917. That was a different Frances Marion Golden, born about 1843-1845, married to Mary Connie E. Reed. Census and other records track the West Virginia Frances Marion Goldens very well.
The Limestone, Alabama Frances Marion Golden, married to Sarah Walker, appears in the 1900 and 1910 census in Little River, Arkansas, which is where she passed away and he probably did too.
Both served in CSA military units during the Civil War. The Alabama Marion Frances Golden served in Co K, 29th Alabama Infantry Regiment, and the West Virginia Marion France Golden served in Co.C, 31st VA Infantry Regiment.
