mkater11added this on 15 Jun 2011It is stated in “Uncle Ham’s” Alexander Hamilton Hudgens (1854-1934) Bible which was passed to Grace Hudgens Davis, that the Durham family came to Tennessee from North Carolina in the period 1800 to 1809. It was at about the same time that the Hudgens’ clan moved from Cumberland County, Virginia to Robertson County, Tennessee. One hand-written Bible statement claims the Hudgens came in 1809; other people say they came in 1811.
He married ELIZABETH GIBSON. She was born Abt. 1775 in VA or TN, and died Abt. 1855 in TN..

My Hudgens Family History Findings 
Could it be that Polly and Mary are the same person? Polly was a common nickname for Mary in that era.
There is no tombstone for James Hudgens III in the Hudgens Cemetery on Floyd Hudgens Rd that was established by his brother, Daniel Hudgens. However, my mother said that he was buried in that cemetery. He died an elderly bachelor, still doing farm work, and living with an elderly, spinster, first cousin, Delilah Hudgens, on her farm in the 1880 Census. He does not appear in any other documents/records after that date. It is believed he died around 1881, like Daniel.
In the 1850 Census, James III is living with his parents and his sister Mary “Polly” Hudgens. He and Mary are both listed as 45 yrs old and born in VA. Hence, the reason some have thought they were twins.
