CORRECTIONS to this post for Verner Boyd Hudgens (born July 27, 1891 and died on November 14, 1958)….he was my great-grandfather on my dad’s side. He and his wife Odessa Teasley Hudgens (her birth and death dates here are correct) lived in the Sweet Home community of northern Cheatham County, TN. They were married on April 1, 1914. They are interred in the Dowlen Cemetery on Triangle Road in Pleasant View, TN. I knew her as a boy but did not know him as he died before I was born. They had three children…a son (John Leander or “Pete”) born on November 27, 1916 and who died on November 19, 1984, a daughter (Verna Mai) born on October 5, 1920 and who died in December 2011….AND a daughter (Virginia Pearl) who was born April 3, 1915 and passed away shortly after turning one on August 8, 1916. J.L. and Verna Mai are buried next to their spouses in Woodlawn Cemetery in Nashville, TN.
Verna Mai Hudgens Davenport (my grandmother) did not die in Woodbury, TN….she in fact was born in Cheatham County, TN and later moved with my grandfather Henry Burton Davenport to Nashville following his return from Navy service during WWII. They never lived in Cannon County, TN though many Davenports (including my grandfather’s ancestors) do still live in the Woodbury area and of those, one did come to Cheatham County, TN from there shortly after the end of the Civil War. Verna Mai’s brother J.L. lived in north Nashville with his wife Kathleen and they ran an upholstery shop there for many years.
Verner Boyd Hudgens had two sisters and one brother….Alma Rose Hudgens Hunter, Beulah Elizabeth Hudgens Balthrop, and George Washington Hudgens.
