Mildred Hudgens 1941

Named after her grandmother, Martha Mildred Hudgens Morris was born December 5, 1921, in Cheap Hill, Tennessee to Durham and Vivian Everett Hudgens. Her siblings are Mary Gladys, T. D. and Jaunita.

When she was three months old, her parents moved to the Greenbrier Community across the river. She attended Greenbrier Elementary School and rode a bus to attend Cheatham County Central High School. After graduating from high school, she attended Nashville Beauty School and worked as a beautician for eight years.

She started dating Paul Morris on December 31, 1941. Paul had also grown up in the Greenbrier Community and had graduated from Cheatham County Central High School in 1937.

During World War II, Paul was stationed in Europe under the command of General George Patton. He fought in five major battles and was awarded the Bronze Star. The couple courted by mail during his time in the service and became engaged when Paul came home on furlough. They married March 26, 1946 at the Ashland City Free Will Baptist Church, with Ms. Mildred’s grandfather Jesse Hudgens officiating. Ms. Ann Walker Heathman, a favorite high school teacher of Ms. Mildred’s, sang at the wedding. The couple made their home in Nashville until 1954 when they moved back to Ashland City.

Their first son, Tom, was born in 1950. After graduating Cheatham County Central High School, Tom graduated from UT Knoxville. Today,he works as an environmentalist for the Navaho Indian Government in Gallup, New Mexico.

Younger son Dan was born in 1954. After graduating from Cheatham County Central High School, Dan graduated from UT Martin. For 31 years he worked as sports editor for the Jackson Sun newspaper in Jackson, TN. He married Lisa DePriest. They have two children, a son A.J., who will graduate from college in California this December and a daughter, Becca, who attends Bryan College in Dayton, TN.

After her two sons started school, Ms. Mildred worked as a first grade teacher’s aid at Ashland City Elementary. She loved that job but later left to work at the Ashland City Florist. Thus started her 25 year career assisting with floral design and coordinating local weddings. She remembers that her first wedding to coordinate was for Myrna Tucker and Billy Don Morris about 42 years ago.

Paul retired from the phone company in 1981 and Ms. Mildred retired from the florist in 1991. They loved working in the community and with their church. Paul died April 13, 2006.

Today, Ms. Mildred enjoys attending and working with the Ashland City Free Will Baptist Church, where she has been a member for 70 years and taught Sunday School for 21 years. She loves company and still enjoys working with plants and flowers. She loves to reminisce about her husband and her mother, Vivian Hudgens, who lived across the street from her for 53 years and died at the age of 103.
