SAMUEL THOMAS HUDGENS (Roy Moses HUDGENS³, Thomas B HUDGENS², William HUDGENS¹) was born 8 JUN 1908 in Illinois, and died 24 SEP 1968 in Marion Memorial Hospital, Marion, Williamson Co., IL. He was buried in RoseHill Cemetery, Marion, Williamson Co., IL.

He married Helen I. STROUD 16 MAY 1931 in Marion, Williamson Co., IL, daughter of Louis STROUD and Elva OWENS. She was born 9 MAR 1911 in Pittsburg, Williamson Co., IL, and died 2 JUN 2008 in Heartland Regional Medical Center, Marion, Williamson Co., IL. She was buried in RoseHill Cemetery, Marion, Williamson Co., IL.

Helen I. Hudgens, 97, passed away Monday, June 2, 2008 at 10:50 P.M. at Heartland Regional Medical Center.

Helen was born in Pittsburg, Illinois on March 9, 1911 to Louis and Elva (Owens) Stroud and spent her early years in that area on the family farm. She remembered riding on the one seat of the family buggy and walking to Fowler School in her father’s footprints. She was baptized in Johnston City Lake and was a member of Lake Creek Baptist church. She was raised during the Depression where she learned to do a lot with a little and those lessons stayed with her all her life. In her lifetime, she saw many firsts: the first airplane in this area, the first car, the cure for many diseases, and many other advancements. She worked at Woolworths, Universal Match, and Albright’s clothing store in Marion. She married Samuel Hudgens on May 16, 1931. They moved to Marion and joined the Third Baptist church where she was one of the oldest living members. She was able to maintain her home with the aid of her son, Tom, who was also her best friend until her death. She loved and appreciated her family and friends and the simple things that life has to offer. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

JAMES HUDGENS III The Bachelor

This proves to me that the James III Hudgens son of our James II Hudgens (1773-1858) could NOT be the James Hudgens(1805-1881) who had family in Williamson County Illinois and died there.

I had been told from folks when I first started my search that James III Hudgens died a bachelor of cancer.

Then I was told this:

No, I had not heard that James III and Mary were twins, but twins “run in the family.” Many instances of twins, but then there were many pregnancies in those days. Neither James III, nor Mary, ever married. My mother said that James III was unusually tall, and is buried in the Hudgens Cemetery in Cheatham County. I haven’t been there lately to double check, but will go later this fall and do so. I believe you had stated somewhere that he was buried in Ill. Am I correct? I do not know what was the cause of James III’s death. I saw one Census where James III and Mary were living with their parents, and both were 45 yrs old. So maybe they were twins. They were the only people in the household besides the parents. I append all the Census records, and other data to my records to back up what is in the record. Later will go back and scan in wills, etc. plus photos.

I am not a genealogist, but I am a sentimental historical geographer of the Sycamore Creek Basin of Middle Tennessee. Charles Gent was a early settler in the Sycamore Creek Basin. The land he purchased was adjacent to that of James Hudgins who was one of my ancestors. Can someone tell how Thomas Gent may have been related to Charles?
Here are some notes I have made

CHARLES GENT (GA) of Washington County, Georgia was born about 1752 and died in Robertson County, Tennessee in 1844 (124- ). His parents were Charles Gent and Alice Carter. After Charles (Sr.) passed away, Alice married Alexander Mills.

This makes sense – since one of Charles and Sarah Gent’s daughters was named “Ailsey” – possibly another form of Alice.

He was a private in the Georgia Line in the Revolutionary War. In 1815 he
purchased 640 acres of land, contained in the North Carolina grant 3407 to Robert Weakley, from William and Jipi Gainer. In 1829 Charles bought 12 1/2 acres from John and Lucretia Perry.

Charles began to divide his land among his children in 1821. That year he sold 10 acres on the east side of Spring Creek to James Maxey and James Sanders for $27. Next he deeded 125 + acres to Zachariah Gent. He deeded 125+ acres to his grandson, Thomas Gent, along with a negro girl named Matilda in April 1822. In December 1823 Charles deeded 88 acres on Spring Creek to J.C. Sanders and a negro named Richard who was about 4 or 5 years old to Catherine Gent Sanders (5-R-160). At the same time he deeded 101 acres to his daughter, Ailsey who was married to Holloway Hudgins. He also deeded a negro boy named Palmetto to her. And to Margaret “Peggy” Gent Harris he
deeded 100 acres.

ZACHARIAH GENT (GAD) was born between 1790 and 1800 (2- ). In 1830 he had three sons and two daughters in his house hold (124-137). who married Sallie Reid, Sallie apparently died young, because Zachariah then married Martha Selkirk. Zach and Martha had a son David Alexander Selkirk Gent.

in 1856 (99). He was appointed to a jury of view in June 1856 to lay off a road from Spring Creek to Ashland City (20-33).
