The Corbitts trace back to Barnwell, S.C. Daniel Corbitt was born there about 1752 and he lived until about 1805. He was in the militia in the Revolutionary War. Daniel’s children included Rebecca, John, Sarah, Susanna, Mary, Thomas, Samuel and Ann. Rebecca and Ann married Baxters. John and his wife, Penny, had Daniel, who was born about 1804 and married Mary Bennett. Daniel and Mary moved to Homerville in Clinch County, Ga.
Brinkley Corbitt was also at Barnwell, and he served under Gen. Francis Marion in the Revolution in 1781 and 1782. He provided six beef cattle for continental and militia use. He married Margaret Connell. Brinkley died in 1817. Isham Corbitt was one of his sons and Elisha may have been another.
Isham, who was born at Barnwell in 1777, married Amelia Stokes, who was born in 1779. Isham was in Edgefield County, S.C., in 1800. He took his family to Bulloch County, Ga., about 1803 and he was there at the time of the Georgia land lottery in 1806.
Isham is said to have lived a short time in Hamilton County. Isham’s children were Celia (1798), Wealthy (1801), Harbid (1802), Marshall (1804), Newsom (1806), Martin (1810), Hillman (1813), William (1817) and Amelia (1820). About 1825, Isham “had domestic difficulties” and left his wife, Amelia. He went west and was away for many years. His remaining family took part in the 1827 land lottery under the listing of “Isham Corbitt’s orphans” at Bulloch County. They left that winter for property in Loundes County, Ga., on the east side of the Alapaha River. Many years later, Isham Corbitt returned to his family in Georgia and sought a reconciliation with Amelia. She would not agree to it – until his last illness when she reconciled and “nursed him tenderly.” Isham Corbitt died in the first year of the Civil War and Amelia passed away in its last year. #21 Velda Ruth Thompson, daughter of Mary Mollie Corbitt Stephens and Daniel Thompson. Velda married Howard Oliver WARNOCK not WARROCK, making their and all of their children’s (Evelyn before marriage of course) last name changed to Warnock and not Warrock. I love my Grandma and Grandaddy (Howard and Velda) very much even though they have passed. Please, in honor of the saintly people they were and in honor of my dad, two uncles and aunt, please help the Warnock name sake to be correct.

I am related to both Daniel b. 1752 and Brinkley. I have been trying to find Daniels father for a long time and see here that it is Joseph. I know Joseph is Brinkleys father but this is the first I see of him also being Daniels father. Do we have proof of that? I know Daniel and Brinkley are related and brothers would make sense. Does anyone know where Joseph, Daniel, or Brinkley are buried in South Carolina?
Loved the pictures of the family and the history but would like to update. JAMES BERRY BAXLEY is still alive as is my MOM EDNA DEE SWINDLE-BAXLEY. ROBERT BAXLEY died in 2011 and AUNT MARY BAXLEY DEARMAN died in 2010. Also if you check the census records Grandma’s name was actually MABEL FAILES instead of MAE BELLE FALES. Also JOSEPH (her DAD) was spelled with the i on every record. Seems the family dropped the i in their last name after MABEL was born! UNCLE BILLY wasw the one who died around 1996! And UNCLE CARL died before him. JAMES is the only BAXLEY left from that generation and turns 80 this year. Hope you can sort this out! She was a niece of Benjamin and Priscilla Corbett. Brinkley Corbett is mentioned in Benjamin’s succession papers, which is what brought me to this site and the belief that this is the family these Louisiana Corbetts came from.
Mary first married J W McDonald (Jacob?), they moved to Catahoula Parish Louisiana around 1805 – 1810, then Samuel Dailey, and had at least four children, William Benjamin McDonald, Priscilla Powell McDonald Desha, Milton Patterson Daily, and Mary Ann Dailey Adams. One reference to Priscilla McDonald states that she was born in North Carolina. Another branch of my family who later intermarried with these McDonalds migrated from North Carolina about the same time.
I just returned yesterday from a trip to Louisiana and have a deep stack of information and some questions about these Corbitts and the various other family connections, relatives of Benjamin and Priscilla, mentioned in the probate records.
