Daniel and Nancy Delaney’s first three sons died in infancy. They were all buried between the house and Floyd Hudgens Road in unmarked graves across from the present Hudgens Family Cemetery.

It is stated in “Uncle Ham’s” Alexander Hamilton Hudgens (1854-1934) Bible which was passed to Grace Hudgens Davis, that the Durham family came to Tennessee from North Carolina in the period 1800 to 1809. It was at about the same time that the Hudgens’ clan moved from Cumberland County, Virginia to Robertson County, Tennessee. One hand-written Bible statement claims the Hudgens came in 1809; other people say they came in 1811.

It is said that when Daniel was old, he was unable to do any work because his fingers/hands were so “crippled.” He would often sit outside under a tree in what is now the Hudgens Family Cemetery. It would appear that he had Rheumatoid Arthritis.

John Thomas and his family migrated on to Williamson County, Illinois in 1852. Sometime in the 1850’s or 1860’s his brother William L. Hudgens and his family also migrated to Illinois.

Marriage mkater11added this on 12 Jun 2011 John Thomas and his brother William were married to sisters, Nancy and Anna L. Durham, respectively. It is possible the sisters were first cousins to Nancy Delaney Durham, the wife of Daniel Hudgens, the brother of John Thomas and William.

This Indenture made and concluded this third day of November one thousand seven hundred and ninety four BETWEEN James Hudgins of Buckingham County of the one part and Notley Maddox of Cumberland County of the other part. WITNESSETH that the said James Hudgins for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred pounds current money of Virginia in hand paid doth by these presents acknowledge and thereof and therefore acquit and discharge the said Notley Maddox his executors and administrators, hath given granted bargained and sold and witnessed and confirmed and their presents doth give grant and confirm unto the said Notley Maddox and his heirs forever a certain tract of land lying in the County of Cumberland containing one hundred and seventy five acres be the same more or less it being the plantation whereon the said Maddox now lives and bounded as follows BEGINNING at Horn Quarter Creek on the south side of Joseph Tarrows at a forked spanish oak thence on Tarrows line to Trents line thence on Trents line to Hornquarter run, thence down the said run to the first station, with all Houses, Fences and waters and appurtences whatever to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the said Land and its appurtences unto the said Notley Maddox his heirs and assigns for ever, And the said James Hudgins for him self and doth convenant and agreewith the said Notley Maddox his heirs and to warrant and for ever defend the said granted land and premises unto the said Notley Maddox his heirs and assigns. At court held for Cumberland County the 24th day of November 1794. This indenture of bargain Sale was acknowledged and ordered recorded

Phiba[Phila?] Hudgens wife of James Hudgins being first privately examined relinguished her right of dower to the within conveyed land and premises.

Since the 175 acres equals size and location of the Deed of Gift of Robert Hudgens to his son James, this James is most likely the father of the Gabriel Hudgens listed as witness. Holloway Hudgens maybe James’ brother, it is unlikely he is his son Holloway.
